Steel, Skill & Detail: More Than a Balustrade

A different kind of project.

The same depth of expertise.

Finished first-floor balustrade — an architectural feature built on multiple trades and skills.

At first glance, it’s a striking new steel balustrade on an existing science building.

But behind the finished result is a great example of the versatility and practical skills within Chalmers Constructions.

From Workshop to Site

The project started with our carpenters designing and installing temporary timber handrails, providing essential edge protection while the new balustrade took shape. Safety is always a priority.

Our team then assisted with the design and prepared detailed shop drawings. Our boilermaker fabricated the steel framework in-house at our Torquay warehouse.

ON-SITE INSTALLATION

Where the Skills Come Together

Fabrication was only half the job. Working with an older building meant careful measuring, set-out and on-site adjustments to achieve a straight, consistent balustrade.

Using our own scissor lift and boom lift for access, our team installed the steel framework and fitted the perforated panels. These progress shots show the job taking shape — and the equipment and installation skills behind the finished result. All materials were transported on our semi trucks and trailers, then unloaded and moved on site by our Manitou.

It’s All in the Detail. The perforated panels created a bold, contemporary feature across the building’s first floor. Attention to detail continued right down to the visible screw heads — individually painted to blend with the finished steelwork.

Perforated panels, fitted with precision. The smallest details matter.

Versatility in Action

This was a different kind of project from the concrete and commercial builds we’re known for, but an ideal showcase of Chalmers Constructions’ range of capabilities — from carpentry and design to steel fabrication, specialised equipment and skilled installation.

One team. Multiple capabilities. A complete result.
