Concrete as an Architectural Feature

The use of concrete by architects and designers has increased exponentially over the years with many internal and external features being done in concrete.

Many TV design shows are assisting to showcase the versatility of concrete both in design, structure and finishes.

Features that Norm has built over the years include, but are not limited to:

• Outdoor areas including bbq’s

• Fireplaces

• Bench tops

• Bathroom vanities

• Water tanks

• Water features

Recently, the use of concrete that Chalmers Constructions has built for outdoor use include:

• A series of concrete planter boxes that include a wood panel texture on the concrete.  These were requested by a client to use as part of their personal and community vegetable garden.

• Curved concrete seating for a commercial head office outdoor area for staff.  These can be replicated as the company owns the formwork that can be adjusted to other designs and sizes. 

• Concrete footing for a statue in Mt Buller.  This footing included the name of the person and his dog indented to the curved concrete.

• Concrete retaining wall panels that included a broken concrete design in the concrete. Chalmers Constructions owns the mat that can be utilised for the manufacture of concrete panels.

• Timbuktu, a job that Chalmers was involved in the concrete structure only (not external panels), utilised the broken concrete pattern on the external concrete pre-cast panels together with metal chains to achieve an additional feature for the panels
